Howdy folks! I'm really jumping in headfirst with all this VR stuffs. Personal projects are moving along periodically as I focus energy between job hunt stuffs and classes...but I've been wanting to finally push out something to Cardboard...and here it is! Well, this is pre-viz anyways..which is still pretty dang fun to stand inside even at this stage. One thing I've always longed for in my non millionaire life, is a super fancy library...the kind that says,<br />
<br />
"I definitely do not have a secret magical doorway behind the bookcase containing the large obvious ornate jewel encrusted glyph book...and under no circumstances should you turn the lantern that is slightly crooked compared to the others."<br />
<br />
This is honestly the first place my mind went when I first saw the Oculus kickstarter....<br />
<br />
Experiencing something you've created with a piece of software... in a
tactile way...and then being able to share that experience? Magic. My hope for the virtual space is that the world will no longer be about owning things...but the creation and sharing of things. Experiencing things. In this new medium, artists and content creators are all Pedro now.<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/BEJFWoAVJz4" width="560"></iframe><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Is sitting in your own library in VR really that different than owning
one? For now, with hardware limitations and such...yeah...but in the
future...who knows? Besides, in a real library can you can grab books via telekinesis? I'm not sure what monetary experience can duplicate that :)<br />

Hey everyone! I've seen an animal rendition of "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" going round that made me laugh, so I made this. More Zbrush & Keyshot shenanigans. Played with fibermesh for feathers, and I've been reading up on how Zbrush fibermesh systems can be exported as Maya fur, so maybe I'll be able to animate this guy one day! (when I get back to the land of broadband and can watch tutorial videos) :)Urchinatorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04254312000325517161noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1134043157010622201.post-55211150758761341882015-12-09T14:46:00.003-08:002015-12-09T14:56:22.387-08:00Ermagerd, Christmas!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Ermagerd, hert cherclet with mershmerlers! Barkley is enjoying the ugly Christmas sweater party very much, he just has resting growly face. Since I'm away from my desktop, this was rendered on my Surface Pro tablet in Keyshot, I had to reduce the fibermesh from Zbrush down to 2 sided just to get him to export! Grooming brushes in Zbrush are cryptic, but fun to play with. Hope you're all enjoying some good times, holiday cookies and "hert chercklit" right now!<br />
<br />
<br />
Bonus fun fact: To cut down on render time, I removed the fur from his backside, LOL! Finally got my workstation set up at my new place.....and it's cooled off enough to work without frying my PC! Did some Halloween Zbrushing, I call this'n "Unlikely Friends." I like the idea of a scarecrow that digs crows. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0OA1Tso7fpg/VjUYpT16ftI/AAAAAAAAA7o/hwoUWWprLmI/s1600/LF_Scarecrow_Turnaround.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="85" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0OA1Tso7fpg/VjUYpT16ftI/AAAAAAAAA7o/hwoUWWprLmI/s320/LF_Scarecrow_Turnaround.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Crows always get the whole "bad omen" treatment like black cats, but they're really fun to watch. If you got no love for crows after watching this roof surfing crow, you've got no soul, haha.<br />

<br />

Here's the crow without the fuzz, cause it's kinda funny to see....:D</div>

<br />
Welp, I suppose I should preface this post with a "spoilers ahoy!" warning....if you haven't seen Mad Max: Fury Road, then maybe go hop in your spike covered desert buggy and catch it. Oh, and bring some water ;)<br />
Ok, everyone else still reading that's been to the box office and back......<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
OH MY GOD CAN WE JUST TALK ABOUT FURIOSA NOW?</div>
<br />
Holy crap. <br />
I'd been looking forward to this movie for quite some time. The trailers were amazing, the reviews were solid, and I was happy to see a lady thrown in there, as an added bonus she didn't appear to be in 6 inch heels and a metallic bikini, so, yeah.... cool, cool.<br />
About halfway through Fury Road I realized just how low my bar had been set for female action heroes, trained by years of either stiletto-ed eye candy, or a female character who overcompensates masculinity so that the "like a man" seal of approval implies toughness and strength. Two stereotypes that both end up kinda boring, one dimensional. Imperator Furiosa is neither of these things. She's a human being, and something Hollywood has failed to give viewers in a very long time. Furiosa has the dichotomy of vulnerability and strength that makes a heroes journey interesting. Would Indiana Jones be interesting if you hadn't seen him freak out over snakes, or seen the whites of his eyes every time he's hanging from a ledge? It's these types of things that make the danger seem real, it causes us to empathize with the hero. If he'd yawned and read a newspaper while flying down the rails in a minecart, he'd have come across as a douche. Yet that's what most female action heroes are written like. Why? Perhaps the faulty logic is in play that fear (or any emotion really) is attributed to weakness, so writers and actresses err on the side of caution when using it for female character development. Through the course of the movie, we see Furiosa experience fear, we see her visibly tear up at loss, we see her put on her "game face" when initially bluffing her crew, when negotiating passage through the canyon, and we see what's beneath all that when she's with the Many Mothers. She's the perfect foil for Max, who trusts no one, and his situation
reflects that. I believe this movie is intelligent enough that the contrast is
deliberate. One could argue that Furiosa's "people instincts" are her
strength. She's a risk taker, but an intelligent one, and in the end
that's what saves them all. There is no doubt she is a fully realized person existing within the Mad Max universe, there is no magic here, no waif with the strength of a linebacker. Her fight with Max is one of the most brutal and compelling bits of fisticuff choreography I've ever seen. Both parties use every tactic available, including assists from bystanders. I've seen plenty of movies where villains fight the hero, and politely wait in a single file line to do it. Yeah, that rule gets broken here, by both parties...and the fight is all the better for it. Yass. Please do more of this movie fight choreographers, it's awesome.<br />
<br />
When Furiosa reaches the Many Mothers....well that was shock number two. I have never seen the likes of this in scifi, action, fantasy.....ever. Grandma snipers on motorcycles bragging about headshots is what the world has been missing. Old broads are the first casualty in all fictional universes, and this movie shows what a shame that is. I would have been less surprised if they had come across a herd of unicorns in the desert and completed the movie riding them back to town. I've just grown accustomed to this... movies & games where the crew
is always a spectrum of all ages for male players, but the one token
female is a 18-23 year old. We're living in a world where Maggie Gyllenhall is told she's too old to
play the wife of a 55 year old, and I know this isn't going to change
overnight, but come on, stop crafting universes where the female
spectrum of existence is missing after 30. It's kinda creepy Hollywood,
just stahp.<br />
The massive box office success of Mad Max: Fury Road proves marketing departments across America wrong. You're underestimating the male audience. It isn't that male audiences wont accept female protagonists....they just won't accept poorly conceived ones. Stop pandering and get on board. What a lovely day that will be....................Urchinatorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04254312000325517161noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1134043157010622201.post-68706345971803577672015-03-17T12:10:00.001-07:002015-03-17T12:10:45.766-07:00Happy St. Patrick's Day!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This is Clover, the lucky St. Pat's Day dragon :D </div>
Born with a gold coin to guard until St. Patrick's Day, lucky clover dragons (unlike those stingy 'ol Leprechauns) really want to be found, cause they cant fly with that heavy coin! While waiting out in clover patches they get kinda bored, and like to pass the time nibbling ridges around their coins. So, go on out and start looking for 4 leaf clovers today.....good luck friends!Urchinatorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04254312000325517161noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1134043157010622201.post-20581559815417895432015-02-16T21:37:00.000-08:002015-02-16T21:37:01.071-08:00Happy Mardi Gras!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I suppose it's still new Year's day for some folks, so here's to a happy 2015!</div>
<br />
Even though its the year of the sheep, this New Year's my mind drifted to thoughts of the pig. I've read that as pets, pigs are super clean, but when penned up where they cant get under a nice shady tree, they'll roll about in the mud to keep nice and cool. Seems like an excellent attitude for 2015. 2014 was chock full of mudholes...but mudholes can serve their purpose for the resourceful. May all your mudholes be cool and refreshing, and, in time, may you find you're rolling in a flowerbed, my friends :)Urchinatorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04254312000325517161noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1134043157010622201.post-36105113799027417072014-12-24T21:47:00.000-08:002014-12-24T21:47:36.433-08:00Merry Christmas!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Buzzy buzz buzz. It's a....gorilla....bee...dude. An excuse to play with more fiber-mesh stuffs. <br />
I started out with him on a purpley flower but then I thought, a dandelion would be ideal for packing as much fiber mesh into one session of zbrush as possible, and it still renders in only a few minutes!<br />

Have you seen the well to do, up and down Park Avenue? </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
This is Sir William Wingsworth, and he travels exclusively by dragon-heated dirigible, as any civilized dragon should. None of that flapping about for him. (although he does secretly wish for a larger wingspan:P)</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I'm experimenting with light caps in Zbrush, he's got skin shader 4 on him, and jellybean on the eyes/gemstone...but eventually I'd like to get this guy into maya and see what he looks like with some Metal Ray rendering stuffs, and brighten up those eyes! </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Now that I look at it, he really *does* need a monocle.....and a flower for his lapel...ah, an excuse to revisit this later!!</div>

"I know....."</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
A bit of Zbrush fun this weekend: Jean Baptiste Emmanuel Zorg from the 5th Element, one of my all time favorite villains, from one of my all time favorite movies! Weapons dealer, snazzy dresser, and utterer of the second most famous "I know" in sci-fi cinema history. I'd like to think maybe he's an alternate universe Han. Weapons dealer, smuggler, and CEO...what Solo could have ended up like if he'd never met Luke, Leia, and Obi-Wan? I always feel a little bad for him when the black brain goo starts dripping from under his mowhawk dome. Poor guy got an offer he couldn't refuse and got himself in big trouble. Gary Oldman's self depreciating delivery of the "I know" line cracks me up every dang time. That slight eyebrow twitch, the glance down to think before answering? Hilarious.</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
I used dynamesh + the nifty extract feature to practice making clothing. He's rendered with the skin4 shader, and the "jelly bean" shader on his plastic hair thingy. I was gonna give his clothes and hair a whirl with some of the other shaders but since it was a caricature I thought it worked better with everything cartoony looking. (I made the neon glowy thing in photoshop! AZZIZ LIGHT!!!!)</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is a Zbrush dragon I've been working on! Sometimes when I work on characters I like to think up little stories about them, and what adventures they might be up to. When I was making this guy, he seemed like an important, regal, but not entirely unfriendly guy. Fierce looking, but intelligent...as a guardian of something important should be. I hope you enjoy cornball fantasy writing! You're gonna want to avert your eyes, and scroll to the end if you don't! (I've also included a turntable render of my model after the story:)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
****************************************</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Lan held the
talisman aloft in the dark like a lantern, adjusting her direction when
the glow dimmed. The soft green light cast snakelike shadows through the
tree limbs,surrounding them both in movement as she walked. She kept
her eyes ahead, attempting to ignore the brief glints appearing just off
the path. Were they the eyes of night creatures....perhaps claws, or
teeth? She concentrated on the intermittent soft clicks of Arfund's own
large curved claws on the stone path behind her for reassurance.</div>
The talisman had led them to a dead end. <br />
A sheer cliff
stretched up into the fog, obscuring its height. Lan turned to Alfund,
who already had his wings unfurled. The world has changed much, perhaps
this mountain was not here when the talisman was created, and the path
is now above? Alfund disappeared into the fog above, leaving the girl
alone. As Alfund broke through the fog into the grey morning sky, both
heard it... The low boom, then another, and another, increasing in
frequency until it became a constant rumbling hum. Alfund immediately
dove back into the fog, he hit the ground behind Lan and threw a
leathery wing over her. The source of the hum appeared to be coming from
the solid stone wall before them, but the lichen, vines and dirt had
fallen from the entire cliff face in a mist of grey dust, and the solid
wall of rock now rippled, as if it were a lake into which a stone had
been cast.<br />
Lan crawled forward beneath Alfund's wing to peer out, mesmerized
by the hum, and the sight of fluid stone. Alfund curled his talons
briefly, then lifted his wing so that Lan could stand. As she walked
towards the wall, she turned back..."I know you cannot enter, but I wish
more than anything that you could."<br />
"Dragons cannot enter the lair of another dragon uninvited, it is
the last privacy afforded us since the blessing of insight connected us
all, but I sense no malice from this one..you are safe here...at least
until he knows your purpose." Alfund cast his eyes down, his jaws opened
briefly then snapped shut.<br />
"I will try my hardest to convince him to extend an invite, Alfund" <br />
Alfund
chirped and raised his eyes, Lan laughed. It was nice to have him
along, even if he could not come into the mountain with her. <br />
<br />
Lan took a deep breath and held it as she passed through the
stone, as if she were entering a pool of water. She stood on the inside
of the mountain shivering, finding it was quite a cold business to have
passed though a mountain. <br />
<br />
"That is a strange greeting, is there something offensive to your senses in here?"<br />
<br />
Lan
was so startled she froze. Here she stood, an ambassador for all
mankind, before the guardian of all magic... scared stiff, shivering,
and still holding her nose as she often did when jumping in the river to bathe.<br />
<br />
"Step forward, and tell me why you are here."<br />
<br />
Lan
stepped forward, and as her eyes adjusted to the darkness of the
chamber, she began to pick out the silhouette of the guardian. He had a
peculiar arrangement of horns she's never seen before that gave the
singular appearance of a crown upon his spade-shaped head.His scales
glinted red, and his eyes glowed ochre and red like fire, far
fiercer than the violet, blue and green she was accustomed to in
dragons.<br />
<br />
Lan had never been more afraid in her life.....................<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Welp, hope you were entertained! </div>
*Disclaimer: I haven't posted any dragons here in a very, very loong time, but I think it's been long enough that it's been established the stuff here is my *own personal art* separate from work...so get ready for a deluge of dragons!<br />

I know you've all got Valentine's Day cards, but have you ever gotten an *after* Valentine's Day card? I put some work into this on Valentine's day, but didn't quite finish it in time, so....um here is a card celebrating...the 15th! <br />
Valentine's Day is for lovers, but the chocomancer waits patiently, for it knows once the sun sets on February14th, it rises on a dark chocolate kingdom....the "seasonal items" aisle at the grocery store. YESSSS, SO MANY CHEAP CHOCOLATES! Stare into the gaping abyss of noughat and see your dooooom! Or noughat, if you actually like noughat. (I do!)<br />
If you happen to like those paste creme filled chocolates though, you are way more evil than the chocomancer, even he leaves them at rest in their paper-lined tombs. What flavor are those things supposed to be???Urchinatorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04254312000325517161noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1134043157010622201.post-86670245393632377012014-02-04T00:10:00.001-08:002014-02-04T00:10:19.731-08:00Owl be toasty<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

It's a silly little owl, um....wearing a hat? I've been talking with friends about studying masterworks to improve technique, and learn through imitation. The marvelous thing about the internet and digital reproductions is the ability to zoom in as far as I please, getting a close up look without being dragged out of a museum for getting nose-prints on an important piece of art. Lately I've been pouring over pre-raphaelite paintings. They always have that "glowey" feeling. I still have a lot to learn about palette choices, composition, and things I probably don't even know I'm lacking, but it is fun to try! Why did I choose to paint an owl in a hat? Iunno....I like owls, and I like hats? Plus everywhere in the country is so frozen over right now I'd feel guilty painting this owl outside without a hat. Stay toasty!<br /><br />Urchinatorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04254312000325517161noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1134043157010622201.post-9459840339761429572013-12-24T17:29:00.000-08:002013-12-24T17:29:27.287-08:00Merry Christmas to all!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Onions are the pigeon of the culinary world. They're loud, obnoxious
flavor bombs, and even if you shoo them away, they leave their calling
card spread out over a surface area that defies the laws of physics and
nature. I don't care what you say, you can't just "pick them off." Again, the onion flavor...is....still...there. Once you put 'em in there, 100% contamination. Now that you know how onion soup is made, want some?</div>

I'm reading a really cool book series called Mistborn, there are a lot of interesting ideas in it, so far I am enjoying it very much! This dude is what I imagine the Steel Inquisitors look like. They have super creepy stakes driven through their eyes right out the back of their skulls! Some sunday doodling on ipad using Procreate. This is CheriEtte...heh. Inspired by crazy hockey goalie padding :) I havent had mch time for personal stuffs, but I've kinda latched onto this idea, and I've got a hankerin' ta build her and animate the transformation sequence. She jumps up in the air and clicks her heels together and POOF! When she lands she's in a firey chariot...CHAAARGE! I'm thinking maybe she has a cool fire whip, and maybe a mace somewhere stashed in that chariot...and I feel very strongly she is the sort to yell "BOOP!" when she uses the flaming mace.<br />
